COCKTAIL EXCURSIONS BY MARK - PART THREE

It’s getting close to our exit from the Viking Sky and we have had such a fun time visiting all of the “Bars” on the ship and selecting our favorite one.  The interesting thing is that neither Mark nor I drink a lot, so it has taken us a long time to get through this list:  121 days for 32 drinks!  But, one has to do what one has to do!  Ha!

We had to make a stop at each of these bars to get photos for this post.  There’s the AQUAVIT BAR which is located on the back of the ship and overlooks the infinity pool.  Very casual and a fun place to sit in the afternoon while waiting for friends to join us for a casual dinner either Al Fresco or in the World Cafe.  It is a great place to view the vistas from the back of the ship. Then there’s the POOL BAR near the pool grill.  It is located by the big open pool area at the top and center of the ship. After a late excursion we often prefer a great burger from the grill and drinks are served (in plastic cups) via the Pool Bar.  Also on the 7th floor is the EXPLORERS LOUNGE BAR, located at the front of the ship with great ocean vistas.  It has a restaurant/country club vibe and is used continuously throughout the day:  Morning coffee, Afternoon glass of wine,  5 pm Happy Hour and Nightcaps while enjoying the live music.  There’s the TORSHAVEN LOUNGE BAR, a night club, that provides drinks to the late night dancers.  On Level 2 is the STAR THEATER BAR that provides coffee and drinks during lectures and evening shows. The RESTAURANT BAR also located on level 2, provides cocktails for The Chefs Table, Manfredis and The Restaurant (all specialty restaurants on the ship).  And finally, the VIKING BAR, also known as the LIVING ROOM BAR or ATRIUM BAR because it’s located next to both areas of the ship. We nicknamed this “THE COOKIE BAR” because there is a little glassed in pastry section at the far end of this bar that has the best muffins and cookies that are available all day.  This bar also makes the best lattes!

While working on this post, Mark and I had to revisit some of these bars to get drink photos and get a re-taste for final drink reviews!  So, since we had to revisit anyway, we decide to mention which bar was our favorite.  For me, it’s definitely a toss up between the “Cookie” Bar and the Explorer’s Lounge.  For Mark it’s definitely the Explorer’s Lounge.

This post is a little late coming!  We started it just before we departed from the ship, planning for it to be our last one until we could wrap things up at home.  But, packing and other events took a LOT longer than we thought and we didn’t get around to finishing it until now - at home!  Oh well, better late than never - I heard that once…….  HERE WE GO!

PIMM’S CUP
Gin liqueur, Sprite, lemon, orange, cucumber

Review: Healthy!
The doctor says to have fruits and vegetables every day.  Is this what the doc had in mind? Nice afternoon cooler!
PIÑA COLADA
light & dark rum, cream of coconut, pineapple juice

Stars: ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️

Review: Tropical Delight!
Available in regular or frozen variety and I tried both.  I like this frou-frou drink.  Watch out for brain freeze if you get the frozen one.  Bring on the beach and sunshine!

Good in the morning, afternoon or evening!

TEQUILA SUNRISE
tequila, orange juice, grenadine

Stars: ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️

Review: Colorful!
As the name suggests, this is a good “morning” drink. Also good for afternoon or sunset……. Does that mean you should order a Tequila Sunset?

TOASTED ALMOND
coffee liqueur, amaretto, cream

Stars: ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️

Review: Yes!!!
Regular or frozen - I did both! Coffee, Amaretto and Cream……What is there not to like?!!  An all-day drink, breakfast and beyond…..

TOM COLLINS
gin, sweet & sour mix, soda water

Stars: ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️

Review: Traditional!
Nice, cool drink with the right mix of sweet and tart.  Drink afternoon or evening.

TROPICANA
Light rum, crème de banana, apricot brandy, peach schnapps, peach juice, pineapple juice

Stars: ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️

Review: Lots of Fruit!
Breakfast of Champions!  Great way to get your daily requirement of fruit…..  Banana, Peach, Apricot, Pineapple - YUM!

It’s also good for afternoon or evening.

VENUS SUNRISE
Highclere Castle Gin, bitters, elderflower liqueur, grapefruit juice

Stars: ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️

Review: Sunrise Surprise!
Made from components that I don’t usually prefer.  This morning cocktail was a very pleasant surprise!  Perhaps it was the elderflower liqueur?

VIKING ROYAL
Viking Aquavit, sparkling wine

Stars: ⭐️

Review: Yuck!
Made from two spirits I like separately.  However, the combo insulted my palate.  Like many things in life, it’s a matter of individual taste….Barb gave it a 3 star rating.  In my opinion, not good anytime of day!

VODKA MARTINI
Dry vermouth, vodka

Stars: ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️

Review: Classic!
As James Bond would say: “Shaken not Stirred”.  I prefer a dirty martini with blue-cheese stuffed olives. Good anytime of day!

WHISKEY SOUR
Bourbon, sweet & sour mix, simple syrup, bitters.

Stars: ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️

Review: Another Classic!
Nice drink from the Country Club crowd.  Easy to drink more than one.  Good in the afternoon or evening.

WHITE LADY
Highclere Castle Gin, triple sec, sweet & sour mix

Stars: ⭐️ ⭐️

Review: Different!
Same mixers as a margarita but substitutes Gin for Tequila.  I like the Margarita combo better.  Afternoon or evening.

WHITE RUSSIAN
Coffee liqueur, vodka, cream

Stars: ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️

Review: Da!
The Russian word for “yes” is “da”.  Da, I will have another!  One of my favorites!

Great for breakfast or frankly, anytime of day.

CHEERS!  We had fun doing this excursion!
